The January 2018 Florida Career Pathways Network (FCPN) Symposium Fosters New Enthusiasm to Career & Technical Education Educators

Best Practices highlighting great innovation and achievements within their programs

Florida Career Pathways Network serves as a platform for educational practitioners and leaders to collaborate on initiatives that are targeted to prepare students at the secondary and postsecondary level for the 21st century high-tech, high-skill and high-paying jobs. FCPN supports excellence in the planning, implementation, evaluation and improvement of career pathways, career and technical education, and education-related reform initiatives across Florida. Its cohort of members and partners who include educators, administrators, and employers have been effective in pooling an extensive array of information aimed at providing a network of communication and resources for new and existing programs. 

 

FLATE is closely involved and has been a longtime member of the organization. As part of its ongoing involvement with statewide Career & Technical (CTE) programs, every year FLATE attends the FCPN symposium to share ideas and best practices. This year FLATE together with the Center for Occupational Research and Development facilitated a pre-conference workshop held on January 10, 2018 in Jupiter Beach, FL. In addition, FLATE participated in two Best Practice sessions at the FCPN Symposium held on January 11 and 12, 2018.
FLATE brought a new element to the annual FCPN symposium in the form of a half-day pre-
conference Necessary Skills Now Workshop. This timely workshop focused on integrating employability skills into technical programs. Partners of the Necessary Skills Now project are the
Center for Occupational Research and Development (CORD), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to leading change in education; the Florida Advanced Technological Education Center of Excellence for Manufacturing (FLATE); The Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance (CSSIA), a National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) National Resource Center, and the South Carolina Advanced Technological Education (SC ATE), a NSF center dedicated to expanding excellence in technical education and increasing the quantity, quality, and diversity of Engineering Technology graduates to support business and industry and to encourage continued economic development.

The Necessary Skills Now project works with teams of faculty and employers to develop curriculum that integrates technical content and employability concepts within existing courses in advanced manufacturing and cyber security. Rather than teaching stand-alone courses on employability skills in isolation from the technical content, the project will provide opportunities to teach employability skills prioritized by industry within discipline-specific courses using authentic workplace scenarios as the context for instruction. The project is also creating an implementation guide and deliver faculty workshops on how to collaborate with employers to replicate the project's integrated curriculum development process across technical programs in other sectors. During the workshop, participants had the opportunity to access advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity modules that integrate key employability skills into technical instruction, templates for creating their own integrated lessons, strategies for partnering with employers to develop authentic scenarios for project-based learning, and received new strategies and resources for teaching employability skills. The pilot phase of the Necessary Skills Now project is now underway. Best Practice sessions were well attended, and evoked pertinent discussions about the state of career and technical education in Florida and related issues.
The session Robotics: A Tool for Integrating STEM Disciplines - presented by Dr. Marilyn Barger, Executive Director, FLATE, and Elizabeth E. Simpson, Lead Magnet Teacher, Middleton HS - described how student robotic camps can be rich learning experiences for secondary level students and still be engaging and fun. Using robotics in the classroom can also deeply engage students in STEM disciplines. Participants had the opportunity to engage in a sharing discussion about what can be learned and taught, how robotics can help make “coding” relevant, improve communication and teamwork skills.

The session Factors Affecting Engineering Technology Pathways, presented by Danielly Orozco-Cole, Associate Director, FLATE, introduced preliminary results of a NSF sponsored national survey PathTech LIFE (Learning, Interests, Family, and Employment). Researchers from the University of South Florida’s Department of Sociology, the University of South Florida's College of Education, and FLATE are partnering in this national survey of individuals completing coursework, certification, and AS/AAS degrees in advanced technologies at community colleges. Preliminary findings will help educators, counselors, and career pathways representatives to identify important factors influencing career pathways into advanced technologies in Florida. Discussion included how targeted research findings can be applied to program development, and career pathways best practices and shared strategies that will result in the increase of career recruitment and retention.

During the 2018 FCPN Awards luncheon, Dr. Marilyn Barger, Executive Director, FLATE, Elizabeth E. Simpson, Lead Magnet Teacher, Middleton HS, and Danielly Orozco-Cole, Associate Director, FLATE, were recognized for their dedication and received two Best Practices Awards.

Farewell to FLATE’s outreach project manager Janice Mukhia



Janice first joined FLATE in 2006, as a part time student in mass communication/public relations attending the University of South Florida. She was hired to develop our FLATE FOCUS newsletter and expand communications with our stakeholders. Janice brought important skills and an outgoing personality to the position along with an eagerness to learn and do a great job. She brought many ideas and much know how to the position. Over the years, she pushed to expand our communications into many new online vehicles, as well as drove our newsletter to excellence.
The FLATE team had the opportunity to see her graduate from the University of South Florida (USF). In addition to her bachelor’s degree at USF, Janice has a B.A. in English literature from the University of Delhi, India. In her years with FLATE, Janice had the opportunity to grow professionally as FLATE Communication Specialist and, in 2016, she took over as our Outreach Project Manager, running our robotic summer camp program, coordinating manufacturing day tours around the state and leading interactions with teachers and students. She has always been a valuable member of the FLATE team.  
          Those of us who have worked with Janice, have found her to be a very conscientious, professional and hard-working young woman. As a communications specialist, Janice helped to disseminate FLATE’s goals and achievements via FLATE Focus and Made in Florida online vehicles. With her exceptional skills, Janice developed communications and marketing strategies that enabled FLATE’s administration to connect with students, educators, industry personnel, and media outlets throughout Tampa Bay. In her latest position as Project Manager, Janice continued her efforts to disseminate, motivate, and connect with the Florida manufacturing and STEM community. Janice continued to strengthen FLATE’s relationships with local, regional and statewide STEM leaders and served as the organization's liaison with all of our Florida stakeholders.

Janice’s contributions have been a great benefit to this organization and she will undeniably be deeply missed here. I have no doubt that as Janice’s career advances, she will continue to prove herself as a valuable asset to whatever organization she is a part of as she and her family settle in North Carolina. Please join us in wishing Janice Mukhia the best of luck and the greatest of success in all her future endeavors. We will all greatly miss her infectious smile and laughter, willingness to try anything new, awesome Indian food and warm, loving presence.

     Answer for sTEm-at Work Puzzle # 62:
          Grinch's Plan to Foil Santa's Trip Fails
Ok, I admit, this puzzle solution requires a tiny stretch in your reality gene.  But it was the season for that anyway. The evidence did support dismissal of the Grinch's law suit to stop Santa's flight and it was based on graphic provided below.  First, the altitude references and Santa's North Pole value is available from graph.  Second, the visual of the snack bags, (the ones the Grinch said Santa didn't put in his pack at the North Pole) are "puffed" up.  This, agree, could be for other reasons, but the higher elevation at Santa's first stop, in Denver, also means lower pressure so the snack bags would "puff" up.  In addition, the Jurors from Florida would know that the bags didn't come that "puffed" up.  (Again, granted that potato chip bags do seem to have more air in them than chips, but that a different story).
      So, puzzle follow up lessons; Other various graph reading themes where actual knowledge needed is not directly provided but is connected to data shown. (Every temperature sensor you can think of.)  Connection of data provided, its inferences, and other information or observations already available.   (In this case, higher altitude means lower pressure, longer mean free paths, and ideal gas behavior.)

This evidence is more than enough to prove Santa innocent.

NSF ATE Opportunities for Educators and Students

I. STUDENT INNOVATION CHALLENGE
There is still about 1 month before submissions to the NSF Community College Innovation Challenge (CCIC) close for 2018.  CCIC is a prestigious, two-stage competition where community college student teams use science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to innovate solutions to real-world problems, compete for cash awards, and earn full travel support (students and faculty) to attend an Innovation Boot Camp in Washington, D.C. The challenge is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). 2018 will be the 4th year of this amazing challenge.
WHO: Teams of 3 to 5 community college students with an interest in STEM, innovation and entrepreneurism, and in making a difference, a faculty mentor and an industry partner.
WHEN: Submit from October 18, 2017, to February 14, 2018, by 11:59 p.m. EST.
Required Innovation Boot Camp for student finalists and their faculty mentor in Alexandria, VA, June 11-14, 2018.
WHY: To foster the development of crucial innovation and entrepreneurial skills, gain confidence,
network, win prizes and learn skills to make real-world change.

II. CCTA ATE Program and Grant Writing 2018 Webinar Series

The Centers Collaborative for Technical Assistance (CCTA) NSF ATE project will be hosting a series of 4 webinars this spring focused on various aspects of preparing a grant proposal for the NSF ATE program.  The first of this series is scheduled for Thursday, February 16, 2018.  Learn more and register online: https://atecenters.org/upcoming-webinars/.

CCTA will also be offering a half day grant writing workshop at the 2018 League of Innovation Conference March 18-21 in National Harbor, MD. The session will be open to all conference attendees.  Look for more information in the conference program.

III. MENTOR-CONNECT
Mentor-Connect is a leadership development and outreach initiative for the National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Program (ATE) led by the South Carolina Advanced Technological Education Center (SC ATE) at Florence-Darlington College. Mentor-Connect provides just-in-time knowledge transfer for STEM faculty including:
·         One-on-One Mentorship Opportunity
·         Faculty and Leadership Development
·         Technical Assistance
·         Resources


You can Apply to Mentor-Connect if you…
·         Work for a community college that has not benefited from National Science Foundation grant funding in the past 7 years.
·         Recognize that your college needs to develop or strengthen STEM technician education programs to meet industry needs.
·         Want assistance in preparing a competitive grant proposal for the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program.

IV. MENTORLINKS
The American Association of Community Colleges’ (AACC) MentorLinks program is designed to help colleges develop or strengthen technician training programs in STEM fields through mentoring, professional development opportunities, and technical assistance; to establish connections for colleges to identify new ideas and relationships through networking opportunities at program meetings and Advanced Technological Education (ATE) National Conferences; and to help colleges gain insight about support for building and sustaining new advanced technological education programs.

V. HiTEC FELLOWS and HITEC CONFERENCE
The NSF ATE Community annually produces the High Impact Technology Exchange (HITEC) conference. This year will be our tenth year and the conference will be held right here in Florida (Two-year technical or community college faculty who have not previously attended HI-TEC are eligible to be selected as HI-TEC Fellows.  Through an online application process, faculty members apply for participation. Those who are selected are provided with a free conference registration plus 2 night’s lodging at the conference hotel (~$1,000 support per person to attend). The online HITEC fellowship application will be available in the coming weeks.
